Review: Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Balancing Facial Cleanser

I’m always on the hunt for new products, and I especially love experimenting with things I’ve never even heard of before. When Sibu Beauty contacted me for a review, I certainly couldn’t pass that up. I had been familiar with Sibu Beauty for awhile, but had yet to try any of their products. They specialize in utilizing what’s called the ‘sea buckthorn berry’, and their products are all natural, with no icky preservatives. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

But what the heck is Sea Buckthorn, anyway?

Introducing Sibu Beauty, premium skin care products made from the Himalayan sea buckthorn berry. Known as the “beauty berry” across Europe and Asia, sea buckthorn contains over 190 bioactive compounds that restore, revitalize, and protect youthful beauty – from the inside-out AND outside-in. These hardy berries help nourish skin, hair, and nails with powerful antioxidants and essential fatty acids, including the rare Omega 7 – a key building block to healthy skin, hair, and nails, and also aids digestion and may help you maintain a healthier weight. Sibu Beauty features luxurious natural skin cleansers, moisturizes, and other topical treatments as well as dietary supplements that beautify and protect from the inside-out.

There is a LOT of seriously fascinating info on Sea Buckthorn at the Sibu website, so instead of spitting a text wall at you, I’m going to link you there.

water, decyl glucoside, coco betaine, sd alcohol 40-b, lauryl glucoside, hydrogenated jojoba oil, carrageenan, glycerin, phenethyl alcohol, sea buckthorn fruit extract (hippophae rhamnoides), sea buckthorn seed oil (hippophae rhamnoides), panthenol, coco-glucoside, glyceryl oleate, xanthan gum, sodium levulinate, sodium phytate, sodium anisate, fragrance (from orange and lemon essential oils

This cleanser dispenses easily and takes the form of an orange-y gel with little specks in it. The specks are super exfoliating, so if you have sensitive skin, I maybe wouldn’t use this every day.

To use this product, you wet your hands first and then pump some cleanser on, and gently massage it onto your face. After rinsing, my face felt noticeably softer, and just… fresh. Y’all know by now that I have the World’s Oiliest T-zone™, but after using this product at night, I woke up with a lot less shine. Maybe there’s hope for me yet. I’m going to start hoarding these berries.

The thing that surprised me most about this product was the scent. I guess I didn’t really know what to expect, because who knows what sea buckthorn smells like, right? But I’ll tell you. It smells citrusy. And… spicy. It smells like spicy citrus, and that’s the damn truth. When I lived in NYC my cousin and I went to this bar on St. Mark’s Place with the most Irish bartender I’ve ever seen. He made my cousin a margarita with cayenne pepper, and it was gross, but that’s not the point. The point is that’s exactly what this cleanser smells like, and it’s not a bad thing. Just don’t try to consume it, maybe. (For the record, my cousin liked that margarita. Maybe I’m just too boring. I’m sure I got a vodka cranberry or something.)

Pros: Nice exfoliation, oil control, and come on… there are beauty berries in it.
Cons: Might be a bit much for sensitive skin.

Final Verdict: Would I purchase this product again? Maybe. I’m definitely interested in trying out Sibu’s other Sea Buckthorn products, though–particularly the serum! You can even buy sea buckthorn raw, if that’s your thing. As for the cleanser, you can find it at Sibu Beauty for $17.95 USD.
